Learn More About Texas

Texas, the second-largest state in the U.S. is divided into 7 geographic natural regions. Each region offers unique ecosystems, ranching opportunities, and outdoor experiences.

  1. Big Bend Country

Located in West Texas, Big Bend Country consists of rugged terrain, including mountains, and deserts. The temperatures in this region are extreme with hot desert sun during the day and cold temperatures at night.  This area of Texas is considered the most beautiful as one of America’s largest national parks is nested in this region. This is also the only area of Texas with mountains. The Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are located in this region named after the Rio Grande River that turns here in a big bend. This area is suited for outdoor recreation due to the mountainous areas that sometimes may even deliver snow in winter. Regardless of the rugged terrain, this area still houses many significant ranches in Texas. In 2024 Texas General Land Office purchased the Brewster Ranch for $164.6 million. The Brewster Ranch is a result of combining many smaller Big Bend area ranches brought together by Brad Kelly. The state plans to utilize some of the funds generated from this purchase to support The Permanent School Fund.

  1. Panhandle Plains

Covering the northwestern part of the state, the Panhandle Plains are characterized by open prairies and canyons. The region’s flatlands and rugged landscapes are ideal for agriculture and wind energy production. A large part of Texas beef production happens in the northern part of this region. Deaf Smith County has over 477,199 head of cattle with the highest number across the state. The eastern part of the panhandle receives a larger amount of rain, making it ideal for ranching. Panhandle Plains also houses the second largest canyon in the U.S., Palo Duro Canyon.

  1. Hill Country

Situated in central Texas, the Hill Country is known for its rolling hills, clear rivers, and limestone cliffs. This region is a popular destination for outdoor activities. Nested on top of the Edwards Plateau, Hill Country is abundant with clear springs and steep canyons.  Due to the picturesque terrain, many dude and guest ranches are located in this area. Enchanted Rock State Park with its granite dome is a destination for campers and hikers. Hill Country is very well known for its game hunting with many recreational high-fence ranches located in this area.   The Hill County ranches for sale often offer live-water, abundant acres, and lots of hunting opportunities.

  1. Prairies and Lakes

Spanning the north-central part of Texas, the Prairies and Lakes region consists of rolling plains, lakes, and cities like Dallas and Fort Worth. The area offers a blend of urban experiences and outdoor recreation. The soil here is rich and fertile making Prairies and Lakes a great agricultural region. With clear lakes, the finishing in the region is popular with many descending into the area to take advantage of these opportunities.

  1. Pineywoods

Located in East Texas, the Pinewoods region is dominated by dense forests of pine and hardwood trees that stretch further into Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. High humidity and heavy rainfalls are characteristic of this region with scattered areas of croplands and pastures surrounded by the forests. Timber and cattle production are a main focus in the Pineywoods with many smaller ranches and farms located in this area.

  1. Gulf Coast

Stretching along the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Coast region features sandy beaches, marshes, and bays. Major cities like Houston and Galveston are located here, offering a mix of urban attractions and natural beauty. The region is a habitat to migratory birds and an ideal spawning area for fish and shrimp.

  1. South Texas Plains

Situated in the southern part of the state, the South Texas Plains region is characterized by its semi-arid climate, brushlands, and rich cultural heritage influenced by Mexican traditions. The area is known for its ranching industry and historical sites. From visiting the Alamo to the Rio Grande River the region offers diverse scenery.  King Ranch, the largest ranch in the country spanning  825,000 acres is nested in Soth Texas Plains.  The Rio Grande River makes the land fertile along the water, making it a great area for farming.  With its rich history of cattle ranching this region is well suited for raising cattle.

For those looking to purchase land in Texas, our team of brokers and agents serves all 7 regions of the state helping buyers locate their ideal ranch property.
