Learn More About Wyoming

Wyoming is the tenth-largest state in the U.S with four distinct geographic regions. Each of these regions is home to different landscapes and ranching opportunities.

  1. The Black Hills lie in the northeastern part of the state. This region is home to the iconic Devil’s Tower, a natural wonder like no other. This remote and eroded mountain range has a magnitude of forestry and deep valleys which give it a very dark appearance, hence the name Black Hills. This area serves a great importance for Native American culture, as the Black Hills were once a sacred place for the Western Sioux.
  2. The Great Plains cover roughly one-third of the U.S. and span many states, including Wyoming. This region covers one-third of the state and gradually increases in elevation from east to west. The deep and well-developed soils as well as the warm and long growing seasons allow for this region to be suitable for agricultural development. The grasses here are either classified as shortgrass prairie or mixed-grass prairie.
  3. The Middle Rocky Mountains cover most of the west and central parts of Wyoming. This part of the Rockies has produced some of Wyoming’s most famous national parks such as Grand Teton and Yellowstone. This is a result of thrust faulting and volcanism. This region of Wyoming does not only consist of mountains, it is also home to many different basins and plains. There are a variety of different soil types that can be found in the Middle Rocky Mountains such as Mollisols and Alfisols. Both of these soils are often described as sandy.
  4. The Wyoming Basin region of Wyoming covers most of the lower and flatter areas of the state. This region is also surrounded by an abundance of mountains, which makes it slightly sheltered from the strong Wyoming climate. The summers and winters are characterized as dry and the springs and falls are described as the wetter seasons. There is a variety of landscapes here that range from rolling slopes and flatlands to low mountains. This region is utilized for its mining resources such as coal, clay, and uranium.
